Today, liberation day in Italy, we planned a visit to the castle of Torre Alfina, just over the border with Lazio. On a clear the day you can see the castle in the distance from Villa Montegabbione.

The Castle of Torre Alfina, a small hamlet of Acqendente, boasts large battlements. It is a place full of charm and mysteries. Dark events and dark deeds that took place in the basement of the residence are attributed to the noble 14th-century Monaldeschi family, lords of the manor.

During the tour, we learned a lot about the history of the castle. Also, the 19th century kitchen was impressive with for that time modern stuff.

Every weekend, there are guided tours.

The olive trees have been pruned. The aim of pruning is thus to induce branches that will bear fruit by exposing them to the light and maintaining a vigorous and active fruiting zone.

The olive tree produces fruit mainly at the periphery and top of the canopy. This is because these parts of the tree are fully exposed to sunlight and become fertile. Based on this fact and on the aims analysed above, pruning for fruiting should consist of the removal of any part that shades other younger parts of the tree*. (*mediterranean garden society)

Planting new Grechetto vines in our little vineyar

Planting new Grechetto vines in our little vineyard. We already have Sangiovese, Ciliegolo and Malvasia. The first two are reds, the last one is a white. We can use more whites, so asked our winemaker to buy some new plants for us. Now we need a lot of patience before they grow grapes, but in a few years we hope to add grechetto to the Vino Montegabbione wines.
Also beautiful moment that we spotted the first swallows today.
